Markdown
Text formatting
This group adds text and inline formatting to a Markdown document: plain text, bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code, superscript, subscript, emoji, and a forced line break. Every instruction appends its content to the end of the document — they don’t insert at a specific spot.
Prerequisite: the workflow must already have a Markdown document created (with Create Markdown) or opened. Every instruction here works on that open document.
These concepts recur across the instructions in this group; they are explained here once.
- Document: indicates which document in the workflow the instruction applies to. If left empty, the current document is used. If the document doesn’t exist (or is not a Markdown/text document), the instruction simply does nothing.
- Everything is appended: each instruction adds its text at the end of the document, one after another. There is no cursor or position — to build a sentence out of several pieces, chain the instructions in the order you want them to appear.
- Dynamic values
@name: the text fields (Text, Emoji name) accept a saved value: type@followed by its name and the engine substitutes the value at run time. - Empty text does nothing: if the text (or emoji name) resolves to empty, the instruction adds nothing. Insert Forced Line Break is the exception — it has no text and always adds the break.
- Saving a result: none of the instructions in this group saves anything; they all add to the document.

Insert Bold Text .md
Appends bold text, wrapping it in **…**.
When to use it: to add a word or phrase that should stand out in bold.
| Parameter | Meaning | Default | Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Document | Document the instruction applies to | (current document) | No |
| Text | The text to add in bold (accepts @name) |
(empty) | No |
Important behavior: the text is written as **text**. If Text resolves to empty, nothing
happens.
Insert Emoji .md
Appends an emoji shortcode, wrapping the name in colons (:name:).
When to use it: to drop in an emoji such as  or :rocket:.
| Parameter | Meaning | Default | Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Document | Document the instruction applies to | (current document) | No |
| Emoji name | The emoji’s shortcode name, without colons (accepts @name) |
smile |
No |
Important behavior: the name is written as :name: (for example ). It shows as an
actual emoji only in Markdown viewers that support emoji shortcodes; elsewhere the :name: text
is shown as-is. If the name resolves to empty, nothing happens.
Insert Forced Line Break .md
Appends a hard line break (two trailing spaces followed by a newline).
When to use it: to force the next text onto a new line without starting a new paragraph.
| Parameter | Meaning | Default | Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Document | Document the instruction applies to | (current document) | No |
Important behavior: this is the only instruction in the group with no text — it always adds the break. In Markdown, a line ending in two spaces forces a line break, so the content added after it starts on a new line.
Insert Inline Code .md
Appends inline code, wrapping the text in backticks. Backticks inside the text are handled automatically.
When to use it: to show a piece of code, a file name, or a command inline in the text.
| Parameter | Meaning | Default | Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Document | Document the instruction applies to | (current document) | No |
| Text | The text to show as inline code (accepts @name) |
(empty) | No |
Important behavior: the instruction picks the right number of backticks automatically so that any backticks inside your text stay literal; if the text begins or ends with a backtick, a space is added on that side to keep it valid. If Text resolves to empty, nothing happens.
Insert Italic Text .md
Appends italic text, wrapping it in *…*.
When to use it: to add a word or phrase that should be emphasized in italics.
| Parameter | Meaning | Default | Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Document | Document the instruction applies to | (current document) | No |
| Text | The text to add in italics (accepts @name) |
(empty) | No |
Important behavior: the text is written as *text*. If Text resolves to empty, nothing
happens.
Insert Plain Text .md
Appends plain text to the document, exactly as typed with no formatting.
When to use it: to add ordinary text, or to write your own Markdown by hand.
| Parameter | Meaning | Default | Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Document | Document the instruction applies to | (current document) | No |
| Text | The text to add (accepts @name) |
(empty) | No |
Important behavior: the text is added exactly as-is — nothing is escaped, so any Markdown symbols you include are kept. If Text resolves to empty, nothing happens.
Insert Strikethrough Text .md
Appends struck-through text, wrapping it in ~~…~~.
When to use it: to show text as crossed out, for example to mark something as removed.
| Parameter | Meaning | Default | Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Document | Document the instruction applies to | (current document) | No |
| Text | The text to add with strikethrough (accepts @name) |
(empty) | No |
Important behavior: the text is written as ~~text~~, which renders as crossed-out text in
viewers that support it. If Text resolves to empty, nothing happens.
Insert Subscript .md
Appends subscript text (small text set below the line), using ~…~.
When to use it: for chemical formulas or footnote-style markers, for example the 2 in
H₂O.
| Parameter | Meaning | Default | Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Document | Document the instruction applies to | (current document) | No |
| Text | The text to add as subscript (accepts @name) |
(empty) | No |
Important behavior: the text is normally written as ~text~. If the text itself contains a
~, the instruction switches to the HTML … tag instead (with special HTML characters
escaped) so the markup stays valid. Subscript renders only in viewers that support it. If Text
resolves to empty, nothing happens.
Insert Superscript .md
Appends superscript text (small text set above the line), using ^…^.
When to use it: for exponents or footnote-style markers, for example the 2 in x².
| Parameter | Meaning | Default | Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Document | Document the instruction applies to | (current document) | No |
| Text | The text to add as superscript (accepts @name) |
(empty) | No |
Important behavior: the text is normally written as ^text^. If the text itself contains a
^, the instruction switches to the HTML … tag instead (with special HTML characters
escaped) so the markup stays valid. Superscript renders only in viewers that support it. If
Text resolves to empty, nothing happens.
