Markdown
Lists
This group adds list items to a Markdown document: bulleted (unordered) items, numbered (ordered) items and task-list (checkbox) items, plus a toggle that flips a task item’s checked state. Each insert instruction appends its item as a new line at the current end of the document.
Prerequisite: the workflow must already have a Markdown document created (with Create Markdown) or opened. Every instruction here works on that open document.
These concepts recur across the instructions in this group; they are explained here once.
-
Document: indicates which document in the workflow the instruction applies to. If left empty, the current document is used. If the document doesn’t exist (or is not a Markdown/text document), the instruction simply does nothing.
-
Nesting with the indent level: every insert instruction has an Indent level field.
0means top level; each level indents the item by two spaces so it nests under the item above it. Values below0are treated as0. -
An empty Text means “do nothing”. All four instructions need the item text: with an empty Text, the instruction is skipped rather than writing an empty bullet, number or checkbox into the document.
-
Dynamic values
@name: the text field accepts a saved value: type@followed by its name and the engine substitutes the value at run time. This does not apply to the numeric or yes/no fields. -
“From variable” fields: the numeric fields (Number, Indent level) and the yes/no field (Checked) each have a companion “from variable” field:
- If you leave it empty, the value typed in the normal field is used.
- If you fill it in with the name of a saved value, the engine ignores the normal field and reads the value from that variable.
This is mainly for chaining instructions (for example, an earlier instruction saves a counter that Insert Ordered List Item then reads as its number). If you only work with fixed values, you can ignore it.
-
Saving a result: only Toggle Task Item State saves anything; the three insert instructions only add content.

Insert Ordered List Item .md
Adds a numbered list item (a 1. line) with an explicit number.
When to use it: to build a numbered list; set the Number for each item, and raise the indent level to nest.
| Parameter | Meaning | Default | Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Document | Document the instruction applies to | (current document) | No |
| Text | The item’s text (accepts @name) |
(empty) | Yes |
| Number | The number shown for the item | 1 |
No |
| Indent level | Nesting depth; 0 = top level, each level adds two spaces |
0 |
No |
| Number (from variable) | Reads the number from a saved value | (empty) | No |
| Indent level (from variable) | Reads the indent level from a saved value | (empty) | No |
Important behavior: if Text is empty, nothing happens. Otherwise it is written as
Number. Text on its own line. The number is whatever you provide — it isn’t
auto-incremented between instructions, so set it yourself (or feed it from a saved counter via
the “from variable” field).
Insert Task List Item .md
Adds a task-list item (a checkbox line), optionally already checked.
When to use it: to build a to-do / checklist; use Checked to mark items already done, and raise the indent level to nest.
| Parameter | Meaning | Default | Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Document | Document the instruction applies to | (current document) | No |
| Text | The item’s text (accepts @name) |
(empty) | Yes |
| Checked | Whether the box starts ticked | false |
No |
| Indent level | Nesting depth; 0 = top level, each level adds two spaces |
0 |
No |
| Checked (from variable) | Reads the checked state from a saved value | (empty) | No |
| Indent level (from variable) | Reads the indent level from a saved value | (empty) | No |
Important behavior: if Text is empty, nothing happens. Otherwise it is written as
- [x] Text when checked or - [ ] Text when not.
Insert Unordered List Item .md
Adds a bulleted list item (a - line).
When to use it: to build a bullet list, one item per instruction; raise the indent level to nest an item under the previous one.
| Parameter | Meaning | Default | Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Document | Document the instruction applies to | (current document) | No |
| Text | The item’s text (accepts @name) |
(empty) | Yes |
| Indent level | Nesting depth; 0 = top level, each level adds two spaces |
0 |
No |
| Indent level (from variable) | Reads the indent level from a saved value | (empty) | No |
Important behavior: if Text is empty, nothing happens. Otherwise it is written as
- Text on its own line.
Toggle Task Item State .md
Finds a task item by its exact text and flips its checked state — a ticked box becomes unticked, and vice versa.
When to use it: to mark an existing checklist item done (or undone) without rewriting the line.
| Parameter | Meaning | Default | Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Document | Document the instruction applies to | (current document) | No |
| Text | The exact text of the task item to toggle (accepts @name) |
(empty) | Yes |
| Save found | Saves whether a matching item was found (yes/no) | (empty) | No |
| Save new state | Saves the item’s new checked state (yes/no) | (empty) | No |
Important behavior: if Text is empty, nothing happens. The match is by the item’s exact text, so it must be written the same way as in the document. If a match is found, its box is flipped and Save found is set to yes and Save new state to the resulting state. If no match is found, Save found is set to no (and Save new state is left untouched).
